Math Game - Roll and Total

Today students learned a math game called "Roll and Total". In this game students rolled two dice (a regular 6 dot die and a die with the actual numbers 3-8) and had to add them together to find the sum. Once they found the total they needed to fill in that number on a graph. The goal was to fill up one column of the graph all the way to the top. Students took turns rolling the two dice and finding the sum with their partners.

The skill that this game aimed to develop was the "counting on" strategy for addition. This means that students say one of the numbers in their head and then count on from that number to find a total. This saves time and is a more efficient way to add the numbers on the two dice than simply counting all of the dots (although that is a good starting point)!
